Fourteen soldiers of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) stood in formation under the bright Mogadishu sun, marking the end of an intensive six-week Aviation Security (AVSEC) Course. The training, organised under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), was designed to strengthen airport safety and improve operational readiness for those tasked with protecting one of the most sensitive gateways in the region.
As the short passing-out ceremony began, Sector One Contingent Administrative Officer, Col Hamza Kasaija, addressed the trainees. He congratulated them for their dedication and reminded them that aviation security carries immense responsibility. “Be careful, remain safe and minimise risks that may endanger lives and property by adhering to what you have been taught,” he urged. His words reflected the seriousness of their mission.
Throughout the course, the soldiers had learned critical skills from identifying potential threats and managing emergencies to maintaining strict airport security procedures. The lead facilitator, Mr David Romoleroux, Prime Manager at Hart/Longport, explained that the training aimed to strengthen the soldiers’ professionalism and ability to effectively carry out aviation security duties.
Battle Group Air Component Commander Lt Col Thamson Musoke praised the participants for their discipline and commitment. He also expressed appreciation to AUSSOM leadership, UPDF command, and the facilitators whose support made the training possible. With new knowledge and renewed confidence, the soldiers now stand ready to safeguard the skies and the people who rely on them
