Nineteen personnel from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), currently deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), have graduated from a six-week Aviation Security (AVSEC) training programme in Mogadishu.

The course concluded with a ceremony officiated by Colonel Hamza Kasaija, AUSSOM Sector One Contingent Administrative Officer, who highlighted the value of specialised training in boosting the competence and preparedness of troops.

He noted that the international-standard course would significantly strengthen aviation security operations at the airport and reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to continuous professional development. Col Kasaija also praised the instructors for their dedication and encouraged the officers to remain open to further learning opportunities to enhance their expertise.

The training was facilitated by Mr David Romoleroux, Prime Manager at Hart/Longport. He explained that participants were taken through a range of practical and theoretical modules, including operating X-ray scanners, conducting patrols, performing physical searches, and using metal detection equipment.

Lt Col Thamson Musoke, Commander of Battle Group 45 Air Component and Airport Commander at Aden Adde International Airport, urged the graduates to apply the skills acquired and maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism in their aviation security roles. On behalf of the trainees, Capt Ikule Yassin expressed appreciation for the training, saying it had strengthened their ability to effectively carry out aviation security responsibilities.
