Police crime and traffic reports for 2024 have shown that 26 Ugandans are killed every day in crime and traffic accidents.
The report for last year released today by the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, shows there was increase in traffic and crime deaths.
“A total of 4,329 cases (representing a 1.9% of the total reported cases in the year) reported to Police by the end of 2024 were due to homicides, compared to 4,248 cases reported in 2023, giving a 1.9% increase in Homicide cases registered countrywide,” Byakagaba said.
The explanation by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) director Maj Tom Magambo shows nearly 12 people are killed every day in domestic, robbery, gun violence, property wrangles, and acts of arson.
Lawrence Niwabiine the traffic police director said there were 25,808 casualties from road crashes in 2024 compared to 24,728 in 2023, giving a 4.4% increase in the number of casualties.
“There was a 19.2% decrease in common offences registered by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety countrywide from 528,025 cases registered in 2023 to 426,432 cases in 2024,” Niwabiine explained.
Figures of 5,144 people killed in 2024 means road crashes killed 14 people every day whereby careless road use and speeding topped the list of causes of deaths.
The statistics imply there has been a gradual death in road crashes from 10 people per day, to 11 per day, to 12 per in 2022, to 13 per day in 2023 and now 14 per day in 2024.
