Police Rescue Baby Dumped in Latrine in Nansana

Police in Nansana have rescued a newborn baby boy who was dumped in a pit latrine by his 18-year-old mother, Ainembabazi Moreen, a house maid.

According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson said the incident occurred on January 6, 2025, between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. in Nansana East II zone, Nansana municipality.

“Moreen’s employer, 39-year-old Niwagaba Praise, a breastfeeding mother herself, raised the alarm after noticing Ainembabazi’s delay in returning to the house,” Onyango said.

Police said upon investigating, Niwagaba found Moreen in the pit latrine room with bloodstains on herself and the floor. Niwagaba then heard the baby crying inside the pit latrine.

“The police were notified, and a team of fire brigade personnel dug into the pit latrine to rescue the baby. The baby was found alive, cleaned with warm water, and rushed to Kawempe Mulago Referral Hospital along with Ainembabazi, who was still bleeding,” Onyango said.

Police said a case of attempted infanticide has been registered at Nansana, and investigations are ongoing. According to Onyango the police plan to interview Ainembabazi thoroughly to understand her actions and also intend to interview the baby’s father.

“This disturbing incident is not isolated, as there have been similar cases in Kampala, such as the one in Kasangati town council, Wakiso district, where a 25-year-old mother dumped her newborn baby in a pit latrine,” Onyango said.
