Security Agencies acknowledged the potential terror threats around the country and cautioned the general public to be more vigilant in light to these threats. The United States embassy issued a security alert over the weekend, warning of a potential terrorist attack in Uganda. The alert cautioned American citizens and Ugandan authorities that possible targets may include schools, shopping centers, transportation hubs, and tourist destinations.
In addition to the warning, the U.S. Embassy recommends that American citizens in Uganda take precautions by keeping a low profile, staying situationally aware, and enrolling in STEP for timely alerts and emergency support. During the weekly security briefing, Police spokesperson ASP Kituuma Rusoke confirmed awareness of the alert and reassured the public that security forces are vigilant and fully prepared to respond promptly and effectively to any potential threats.
“What Ugandans should know is that Uganda is one of the countries that fight terrorism, so the terror groups will always look for possible ways to avenge on Uganda. But we cannot take these threats for granted. We are urging the public to remain cautious, particularly in areas that attract large crowds’’ Rusoke stated.
The police have reaffirmed their dedication to safeguarding the well-being of all residents and visitors in Kampala, stressing that community engagement and cooperation are crucial in preventing and responding to potential security incidents. “The public should follow the usual procedures we always ask people to do, be watchful on your neighbourhood, report any suspicious thing, let the arcade management heighten security, buses and taxis also should check however, is going.”Rusoke said.
The police spokesperson further encouraged the public to save the phone number of the area police officers, enabling rapid communication and prompt assistance in case of any urgent situations. The recent incident was a twin bombing attack in Kampala, which resulted in loss of life and injuries. The attack, carried out by suicide bombers, targeted Parliamentary Avenue and the area outside Central Police Station (CPS). The attack was attributed to Allied Democratic Forces-ADF.
