National Identification and Registration Authority, NIRA has announced that it will work with police to have a crack down on money lenders who take National IDs as collateral for loans.
Earlier this month, NIRA informed the public that legally National IDs are property for the government and anyone that withholds it from the rightful owner for any reason does so unlawfully.
According to Osborn Mushabe, the public relations officer at NIRA, it has been noted that some members of the public falsify the loss of their IDs at police stations yet they are withheld with money lenders.
“We shall liaise with Uganda police to carry out raids, investigations and arrests against all still in custody of National IDs as collateral, security or mortgage.”
He issued a warning to members of the public telling them to only use National IDs for identification where required.
