The former Inspector General of Police, Gen Edward Kale Kayihura, is set to retire from Uganda People’s Defence Forces -UPDF before this month ends. Gen Kayihura who has been on trial in the Court Martial over various charges is set to retire alongside nine other Generals.
UPDF Deputy Spokesperson, Col Deo Akiiki, has since confirmed that Gen Kayihura will be officially released from the military this month. Gen Kayihura served as IGP for more than 12 years from 2005 when he replaced Gen Edward Katumba Wamala.

He was sacked from IGP position on March 4, 2018 by his appointing authority President Yoweri Museveni and replaced him with his then deputy Martin Ochola. He was arrested three months later and charges over giving weapons preserved for armed forces to civilian groups such as Boda-boda 2010.
He was also charged with aiding and abetting the abduction, kidnap and repatriation of Rwandan political fugitive without clear legal processes. The four star General denied all the charges and it is upon Museveni to direct the Court Martial to drop the charges against him before he retires.
Gen Kayihura is the most senior among the 10 retiring Generals. Being a full General, he is two and three ranks above his colleagues with whom they are set to retire. Gen Kayihura is set to return to legal practice after he renewed his legal practice certificate a year ago.
