Teacher Drowns in Lake Bunyonyi

Christopher Ochet, a primary school teacher, drowned to death in Lake Bunyonyi, in Kabale district, Kigezi policing region, in Western Uganda. Ochet 27, on Sunday morning, went with pupils of Genesis Nursery and primary at 7:30 am to jog but he afterwards decided to swim.

Elly Mate, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson, said Ochet could not return to the shores after swimming. “He opted to swim and, on his way, back to the dock, struggled and he couldn’t make it to the shore,” Mate said.

Ochet has been teaching in Kabale for the last two years but he hailed from the Kwania district in northern Uganda. Police made a frantic hunt for Ochet’s body with the help of the local divers for more than seven hours until it was recovered at 2 pm.

Mate said the search for Ochet’s body was joined by the security leadership of both Kabale and Rubanda. The police commanders utilized the incident to tip the community on how to prevent water incidents and how they should freely work with the marine police to minimize drowning incidents.

Some of the senior police officers from Kigezi regions who joined the search for Ochet’s body are; Regional Police Commander -SSP Ibrahim Saiga, Resident District Commissioners of Kabale and Rubanda district Godfrey Nyakahuma and Lillian Ruteraho respectively. Resident Internal Security Officer- RISO Maj Jerome Mugarura, Kabale District Police Commander SP Abel Ruganza, Rubada DPC SP Abel Barugahare.
