
The number of Ugandans killed every year is gradually on the increase according to the latest statistics released by the Uganda police force’s criminal investigation directorate -CID. The figures show 4,043 cases of homicide were reported to CID by the end of 2022 which was a 3% increase compared to 3,912 murders registered in 2021.
Maj Tom Magambo, the director of CID, said the cases of murder took the lives of 4,143 Ugandans whereby 3,229 were male adults, 536 were female adults, 215 were male juveniles and 163 were female juveniles.
Police have observed that killings by assault have been on the rise and even last year 1,095 people were assaulted to death. This was also an increase compared to the 1,085 people who were assaulted to death in 2021.
Magambo has explained that 978 persons were lynched to death, out of whom, 943 were male adults, 25 were female adults, nine were male juveniles and one was a female minor. “A total of 382 persons were strangled to death in 2022, of whom, 221 were male adults, 88 were female adults, 40 were male juveniles and 33 were
female juveniles,” Magambo said.

CID has also indicated that 296 persons were shot dead, of whom 266 were male adults, six male minors, 19 female adults, and five female juveniles. Police have further revealed that 291 persons were killed as a result of aggravated domestic violence of whom 114 were male adults, 134 were female adults, 30 were male juveniles and 13 were female minors.
Magambo also explained that domestic violence is still one of the major contributors to homicides in Uganda.
