The Uganda police force has revealed that it is going to rollout a digital system that will be monitoring activities of driving schools across the country. Acting Commissioner Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV) Eng Patrick Waiswa, has told driving schools that they will be using digital system to also observe and assess content being taught to driving students.

“Police is rolling out a new digital system that will monitor the work of driving schools and how the officers at IOV inspect the applicants from driving schools. The system will also monitor content being taught, how many applicants the school is training, facilities used and their effectiveness, and then be able to give an exam to the applicants online or off-line,” Waiswa said.

He was meeting the owners of driving schools on Saturday. Waiswa said this is intended to streamline the activities, operations of driving schools, and improving Road Safety. “It’s our duty and responsibility to improve driving standards in the country. It is you who trains the drivers. So, we have to sit together and find means of improving road safety and we can only achieve that if you produce good drivers on the roads,” Waiswa said.

IOV is responsible for vehicle inspection, driver testing and car fitness in Uganda. Waiswa emphasized that the digital monitoring system is part of the efforts aimed at ensuring that everyone acquiring driving permits (License) is trained by driving schools. “You must follow the curriculum from the government.”

On average, Uganda loses 10 people per day in road crashes. However, the numbers of road fatalities on Ugandan roads rotated between 12 and 14 for the better part of last year.
