The Uganda People’s Defence Forces -UPDF contingent in Somalia has arrested its soldier who shot and killed his three colleagues on Monday morning.

Corporal Simon Agaba opened fire at his three colleagues guarding Aden Adde Airport killing three on spot.

Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF Spokesperson, said Cpl Agaba will be arraigned in the Court Martial to face charges of murder. Brig Gen Kulayigye said they have not yet established what triggered Cpl Agaba to exterminate his colleagues’ life.

Cpl Agaba is attached to Base camp in Mogadishu. The killed soldiers have been identified as Lance Corporal Christopher Kigongo, Lance Corporal Lord Charles Mangwi and Private Charles Akatwongyera.

UPDF has been in Somalia since 2007 under the African Mission in Somalia – AMISOM which metamorphosed into African Transition Mission -ATMIS last year.

Uganda has more than 6000 soldiers who often serve for one year and are always replaced by other soldiers. Incidents of soldiers in Somalia shooting themselves have previously been associated with infidelity.
