Renowned Ugandan music promoter, Abby Musinguzi, has been charged and remanded over last Saturday’s tragic New Year’s event.
Musinguzi organized a music show at famous entertainment center Freedom City along the Entebbe road which resulted into the death of 10 people.
Senior Commissioner of Police, Fred Enanga, the national police spokesperson, said the deaths resulted from emcee’s recklessness when he urged merrymakers to move out to watch fireworks display at midnight.
After watching the fireworks, people jostled to get back to their respective seats. In the process, 10 people where killed in the stamped.
Police have identified the victims of the New Year’s tragedy victims as Daniel Kibuuka 11, and Daniella Kibuuka 14, residents of Gangu “B” zone, Ibrahim Kizito Ibrahim 11, who hailed from Kyebando Erisa zone, and Hakimati Nazima, 13.
Other fatalities are; Viola Nakanwagi 18, a resident of Watuba-Matugga, Namyalo Mary 30, a resident of Ndejje-Luga zone, Hadijjah Nakakande 16, a resident of Massajja “B” zone, Margeret Nakatumba 29, and Shafiq Mwanje, a resident of Kanyanya. However, one person had not yet been identified by Monday evening.
Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police -ASP James Waigo, the Katwe division Officer In charge of Criminal Investigations, has preferred nine counts of rush and negligence causing death against Musinguzi.
Musinguzi was arragned before a Magistrate’s court in Makindye division, in Kampala. The promoter who also subscribes to the National Unity Platform -NUP led by Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has been remanded and will reappear in court next week.
