The Kampala metropolitan police leadership has reminded the public that they are left with only seven days to voluntarily hand over all clothes similar police and military uniforms.
Senior Commissioner of Police -SCP Stephen Tanui, the Kampala metropolitan police commander gave a 14 days Ultimum to all individuals possessing uniforms or clothes similar to those of security agencies to hand them to nearly security offices.
Tanui emphasized that after 14 days, security personnel will comb all areas within KMP in search for whoever will be found possessing uniforms preserved to for army and police forces.
Assistant Superintendent of Police – ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy KMP Spokesperson, said some civilians have already started handing over clothes that are similar to uniforms of security personnel.
“The territorial Police at Kampala Metropolitan continues to collect Military camouflage, Police equipment and Uniforms. The items which are being recovered from all over Kampala Metropolitan area range from Police Khaki Uniforms, Handcuffs, Military Uniforms and camouflaged attires that resemble Military Uniforms,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Kampala dwellers have been reminded that the Voluntary hand over of these attires started on the December 02 and will run up to 15th December. ASP Owoyesigyire adds that a joint operation will be launched after the 14 days of Voluntary hand over.
“If found with government stores and any thing that is a military camouflage, you will be arrested and prosecuted.
We thank members of the general public who have chosen to respond positively to the exercise and also encourage those that haven’t, to do so,” Owoyesigyire said.
Towards the start of the 2020 presidential campaign period, military and police arrested hundreds of People Power Movement subscribers because of wearing red berets. Most of them were charged in the court martial though the movement that metamorphosed into National Unity Platform -NUP chose them as symbols to distinguish themselves from others.
