At least three people are behind bars after they were arrested for being in possession of vandalized electric conductors in Kibibi town council, Butambala district. Assistant Superintendent of Police -ASP Lydia Tumushabe, the Katonga regional police spokesperson, said numerous complaints have been reported by locals who are living in darkness because of vandalized conductors.
ASP Tumushabe explained that Butambala and Gomba police decided to conduct an operation on various roads checking vehicles and they landed on an Ipsum UAN 573K loaded with vandalized conductors.
“Resulting from numerous complaints of vandalism of electricity infrastructure in Katonga Region, the territorial police of Butambala and Gomba carried out an operation. At around 9:44 pm at Kibibi town council in the Butambala District, police intercepted an Ipsum UAN 573K blue in colour and when searched, it was found carrying suspected stolen electric wires,” ASP Tumushabe explained.
Police immediately arrested its occupants Arafa Kalema Arafa, Sam Kiryokyi, and Charles Kitendwe. Kalema 24, is a peasant and resident of the Mpigi town council, Mpigi District, Karyokyi 24, is a resident of Bukandula town council, in Butambala district while Kitendwe 42, is an electrician and resident of Kabowa zone, Lubaga division, in Kampala.
But during interrogation, Kalema and Kitendwe pinned Karyokyi that he was the person who had sold them the electric wires. ASP Tumushabe said the trio held at Butambala police station were being processed for court.
More than 60 electric vandals have been netted in operations conducted with the help of crime intelligence in Kampala, Mityana, Masaka, Mpigi, Mubende, Kassanda, and Mukono since June this year.
