Tayebwa, the New Gov’t Chief Whip Who Once Ordered Beating of UMEME Technician

It is no longer news that president, Yoweri Museveni, has appointed new members of cabinet to serve with him in this sixtieth elective term. Among the many who have earned themselves cabinet positions is Ruhinda North Member of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa.

Tayebwa may not be among the most talkative MPs, but he shot to limelight last year when he ordered a UMEME technician, Bonny Bukenya, to be caned like a baby. Bukenya tasted the anger and wrath of Tayebwa in August when he forced him to lie down in mud and was thrashed severally.

The incident was captured on video thus attracting public criticism. Bukenya rushed to Katwe police station and opened a case against Tayebwa. As human rights defender and UMEME lawyers seized the opportunity to teach Tayebwa a lesson ‘never to carry the law in his hands’ the legislator quickly apologized to his victim.

Bukenya and Tayebwa finally agreed to withdraw the police case which was opened after UMEME filed a case of assault at Katwe police station. The video clip that went viral show MP Tayebwa was seen questioning the contractor who had disconnected power in addition to ordering him to lie down. Bukenya was seen being beaten as they counted up to 10 strokes.

Although Bukenya and Tayebwa amended fences, it will remain in records that the new Gov’t Chief Whip doesn’t give a damn and can carry the law in his hands once charged.
