Police in Mukono District has launched a hunt for thugs suspected to hiring, strangling and stabbing a special hire taxi driver on Wednesday afternoon.
Assistant Superintendent of Police –ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, said Batte Christopher was hire by three thugs at around 3pm at Seeta township, in Mukono District. Batte was a resident of Nyenje village and was known for offering special hire services.
Police said the thugs told Bette that they wanted to be driven to Bajjo village but they strangled him in addition to stabbing him eight times along the way.
“Yesterday at about 1500hrs at Seeta Township, it is alleged that three suspects hired a special hire driver one Batte Christopher, 58, a resident of Nyenje to transport them to Bajjo village between 1500hrs and 1800hrs. The suspects while at Bajjo, strangled and stabbed the victim five times on the head and three times on the right hand,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
The trio bundled Batte in the trunk of his vehicle registration number UAY 765H Toyota Premio white in colour. Trouble started when the vehicle got stuck as they were hastily driving the away. This forced them to call nearby people for help in order to push the car back on road.
In the process of pushing the car back on the road, the people saw blood leaking from the car trunk and they asked them what they were carrying. The culprits did not give clear answers.
“On opening the car trunk, the body was discovered and immediately mob attacked the suspects injuring one while two escaped in the confusion (a man and a woman). Police is hunting for the suspects; the vehicle was also damaged in process of the mob action,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Mukono Police was later informed of the occurrence and rushed to the scene. Police rescued one male suspect from charged residents and rushed him to CPR Medical Centre in Mukono town for treatment pending interrogation.
Among the exhibits police retrieved from the scene and car include a knife and rope. Batte’s body was taken to Mulago for postmortem. Police have since launched a hunt for other suspects who include a man and woman who fled the scene.
