
Justice Wilson Kwesiga, who is the head of the criminal division of the High Court, has warned police investigators against forcing suspects to confess to crimes.
The warning to detectives was made today at the opening ceremony of a two -week refresher course for detectives on Homicide at CID headquarters in Kibuli.
Kwesiga urged investigators to be professional in whatever they do, and not to be compelled to do wrong things. Investigators, according to Kwesiga, should aim at all parties involved in the case getting justice rather than convictions.
Over the years there have been incidents where suspects have appeared in court with disastrous injuries after they were tortured at hands of security forces such as police and army in order to confess to some crimes.
Former Kamwenge town council mayor, Godfrey Byamukama was tortured to the extent of being bedridden at Nakasero hospital by Flying Squad Unit –FSU then under the commander of ACP Herbert Muhangi.
Byamukama was being accused of having been part of the group that orchestrated the killing of police spokesperson also human resource director for development AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
AIGP Grace Akullo, who is also CID director, said the two- week refresher course will help homicide investigators develop knowledge and skills to effectively and efficiently manage cases. More than 100 detectives more so homicide team are undergoing to a two weeks refresher course.
