Two Arrested Over Counterfeits US Dollar Valued 89M

At least two people are in police custody on allegations of being in possession of US Dollar counterfeits valued 89.6million shillings. The duo identified as Maria Nakaweesi, a businesswoman and Special dirver, Umaru Lutaaya, were arrested yesterday afternoon.

Superintendent of Police –SP Patrick Onyango, who is also the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said Nakweesi and Lutaaya were arrested based on intelligence.

“The duo was arrested yesterday after intelligence agencies got information about the illegal activities they were about to be involved in. They were arrested along Kayunga Road and detained at Mukono Police Station,” SP Onyango said.

SP Onyango said the duo was moving in a motor vehicle registration number UBD 902Y, Raum. When police searched the vehicle, counterfeit of US dollars 243 notes of 100 bills equivalent of US$24,300, metallic box containing some chemicals and others were recovered.

Nakaweesi and Lutaaya’s case is being investigated by Kibuli CID headquarters. Before facts regarding Nakaweesi and Lutaaya arrest, earlier, Robert Ssesazi, 38, a businessman at Nabugabo Arcade and a resident of Buziga, Makindye Division had reported a case of kidnap of Maria Nakaweesi, 40. Ssesazi’s case could no longer stands as it was established she was in lawful custody over offence of counterfeits.
