A 15-year-old student of Bukomero Secondary School died after allegedly drowning herself in a neighbour’s dam following a disagreement with her mother in Bukomero Sub-county, Kiboga District.
According to the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Lameck Kigozi, the incident occurred on July 14, 2026, at Temanakali Village.
SSP Kigozi said the deceased, identified as Nanyonjo Priscilla, a Senior Three student and daughter of Nalugwa Fatuma, left home after an exchange with her mother early that morning.
“Events leading to this incident began at 06:00 hours of 14/07/2026 when the mother asked her daughter whether she was not going to school. The girl, in a bad mood, responded that she had washed her uniform and moved out of the sight of her mother in protest,” SSP Kigozi said.
He explained that the teenager crossed the road to a neighbouring property belonging to Mr. Kinalwa John, where there is a dam. “The mother quickly followed her but only found her abandoned shoes on the shore of the dam. The girl had already jumped into the dam,” SSP Kigozi added.
Police said the mother’s alarm attracted residents, including the village chairperson, who reported the matter to police. Officers visited the scene, recorded witness statements and recovered a pair of shoes from the shore. SSP Kigozi noted that the dam is approximately nine feet deep.
“The body of the deceased was retrieved from the dam and identified as the body of Nanyonjo Priscilla. A postmortem examination was conducted at the scene before the body was handed over to relatives,” SSP Kigozi said. He added that the deceased had no known history of mental illness and had been raised by her mother.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing. SSP Kigozi appealed to owners of dams and other water reservoirs to properly secure them, warning that unsecured water bodies pose a danger to members of the public.
