Police Arrest Two Suspects Over Phone Snatching Along Jinja Road

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with phone snatching along Jinja Road in Kampala, recovering seven mobile phones and a vehicle allegedly used to conceal the stolen gadgets.

The suspects, identified as Kato Jonathan and Nyanzi Hassan, were arrested on October 11, 2026, at about 7:17pm near Lugogo traffic lights during an operation targeting phone snatchers.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the operation followed a phone-tracking effort by one of the victims, which led officers to a white Toyota Wish, registration number UBH 945R.

Police recovered seven mobile phones of different brands from the vehicle. Kato reportedly admitted to being the driver of the vehicle, which investigators believe was being used as a hiding place for the stolen phones.

The recovered phones and vehicle have been exhibited as investigations continue. Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects could also be linked to other similar offences reported at Bugolobi Police Post. Police are continuing investigations to establish their possible involvement in the reported cases.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant, safeguard their mobile phones and other valuables, and promptly report cases of phone snatching to the nearest police station. The arrests come amid efforts by security agencies to curb phone theft and apprehend individuals suspected of targeting members of the public, particularly during busy hours in the city.
