The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is mourning the sudden death of the Armored Division Commander (Masaka), Major General Deus Sande, who passed away early this morning in Mpigi District.
Confirming the development, UPDF spokesperson Colonel Chris Magezi said Maj Gen Sande died at about 3:45am while traveling to Kampala to attend the funeral service of Major General Francis Takirwa at All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero.
“Tragedy has struck the UPDF family again,” Col Magezi said, adding that Maj Gen Sande developed breathing complications during the journey.
He explained that the senior officer was rushed to a hospital facility in Mpigi, where medical personnel attempted to save his life, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
“The exact cause of death will be ascertained later,” Col Magezi noted.
Maj Gen Sande had been heading to attend the funeral of Maj Gen Takirwa, who died on Saturday, February 7, 2026. His passing now compounds the grief within the military fraternity, which had already been preparing to lay Takirwa to rest.
Col Magezi extended condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Maj Gen Sande on behalf of the UPDF, describing his death as a significant loss to the force and the nation.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements for Maj Gen Sande are expected to be announced later.
