UPDF Soldier Dies in Road Crash Involving State Minister for Defence

A Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldier and driver to State Minister for Defence, Huda Olele, has died in a road crash at Bombo-Kalule along the Kampala Gulu highway. The deceased soldier has been identified as Lance Corporal Moses Edongoto, with force number RA 275589.

The crash happened at around 7:45 according to Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Sam Twineamazima. “This evening at approximately 7:45 pm, a fatal road traffic accident occurred in Kalule Village, Nyimbwa Sub-County, Luwero District, along the Kampala-Gulu highway. A white Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UAN 394Z, traveling from Kampala towards Luwero, attempted a reckless overtaking maneuver near Kalule,” ASP Twineamazima said.

Twineamazima added: “During this overtaking, the truck collided head-on with an oncoming green Toyota Hilux (registration UG 0388D), which was part of an official convoy of Hon Huda Olele, state minister for Defense and veterans affairs traveling from Luwero towards Kampala.”

Police said the collision resulted in the immediate death of one army officer while six army officers and two civilians sustained injuries and were rushed to Bombo General Military for urgent treatment. ASP Twineamazima said the vehicles involved were subsequently towed to Bombo Police Station for further investigations.

According to preliminary police findings, the cause of the crash was reckless overtaking by the driver of the Fuso truck. Police added that investigations are ongoing. The Kampala-Gulu highway is one of the roads that claim dozens of road users and a few weeks ago 46 people died in a traffic accident that involved multiple vehicles.
