BY EVA NAMUGABI: Nkozi University has unveiled a Short Course on Chaplaincy and pastoral Care aimed at empowering chaplains with essential knowledge, values and skills to enhance their work on spiritual and pastoral care.
The Seven days training and capacity building empowerment Program was initiated by Nkozi University is expected to kick start with over 70 chaplains in Uganda serving in several institutions including universities, vocations, and schools; hospitals, military units, prisons, corporations, and public and private entities will all be allowed.
During the launch, Nkozi University Vice-Chancellor Professor Patrick Kyamanywa, emphasized that Chaplains play a fundamental role in providing spiritual and emotional support among their communities.
He highlights that given the dynamics in society, the short course that started on 8th -13th July 2024,with its first cohort ,will therefore equip chaplains with the required knowledge, values, skills and tools relevant for enhancing their spiritual and pastoral care roles, recognizing the evolving challenges and needs of the contemporary world.
Among the skills to be received by the participants will include advanced training in counseling techniques, active listening, and pastoral support to elevate their service delivery.
On Ethical and Moral Guidance, they will be guided on how to navigate complex ethical dilemmas and provide informed counselling grounded in their religious or spiritual traditions.
On his part the Bishop of Masaka diocese Rt Rev Serverus Jjumba, representing the Archbishop- Elect of Gulu Archdiocese, Rt Rev Raphael Wokorach as the Chief Guest. Commended the initiative, asking the religious to prioritize their pastoral obligations.
Bishop Jjumba however, pointed out the need to be spot on when it comes to issues affecting the communities citing agriculture related innovations as crucial for farming dependent communities like Masaka district.
He reveals that the short course follows a research that was carried out by Nkozi University in the Catholic Church which identified gaps in the area of chaplaincy that required interventions for effectiveness in service delivery.
According to the University Community Building and Outreach that will enable discussions on several strategies for community engagement will help chaplains foster a sense of belonging and support among those they serve. But also Self-Care and Resilience: Resources and support mechanisms will be provided to help chaplains prioritize their own well-being amidst the demands of their roles.
The short course will also give priority to Crisis Intervention under which chaplains will be prepared to effectively respond to emergencies and trauma within their communities.
Interfaith Dialogue and Collaboration will be among the short listed areas under this course focusing on mutual respect and collaboration among chaplains from diverse religious backgrounds, promoting unity and shared learning.
Meanwhile Prof.Kyamanywa says Professional Development will not be left out to ensure that ongoing opportunities for workshops and networking will be shared so that chaplains remain updated on best practices and emerging trends.
Another area of emphasis according to Prof.Kyamanywa is empowering the chaplains on how to adapt to contemporary Challenges through which Tools and strategies will be shared to help chaplains navigate modern challenges such as technological advancements and evolving social dynamics.
