The Government through the Ministry of Lands Housing and Urban Development is deliberating on revising housing cooperatives to provide affordable loans for houses and land.

While handing over 90 housing units to clients of BuildNet, a real estate company today in Najjera, the minister for lands Judith Nabakoba noted that the demand for proper housing among citizens is still high despite what real estate companies like BuildNet are doing.

She also mentioned that the ministry is working with real estate companies to see how better to curb this shortage for affordable housing especially in urban areas.

At the moment, statistics show that 67 percent of the population in the urban area is living in informal settlements with one of the major causes being affordability.

Ibrahim Ssemaganda, the Director BuildNet however mentioned that operating to full capacity is a challenge because of the cost of building materials.

“Any provisions that can reduce the cost of construction materials, will help reduce taxes on the materials so that we can reduce the price of apartments.”

The project commissioned consists of 3 blocks where the clients have received lawful documents to the ownership of their apartments.
