By Benjamin Mwibo: Cavendish University Uganda has embarked on crime prevention and giving support to the government of Uganda through introducing a course that targets prisoners serving in jail.
The course, entitled Diploma in Paralegal Studies ( DPS) is purposed at equipping and sensitization of majority Ugandans in prisons with particular understanding of the laws, this has been unveiled by the Vice Chancellor Prof. John Francis Mugisha and the Executive Director Mr. David Mutabanura during the brief of the forthcoming 12th University graduation ceremony scheduled on 10th August.

Accompanied with the unveiling of the course, other two new courses like Master of Information Technology (MIT) intended for students in related technology programs and a Higher Certificate in Biological Sciences have been added to the University curriculum, Mutabanura informed the press on Thursday at the institution headquarters in kampala.
He added that the development comes as a result of the University in conjunction with a Non Governmental Organizations called Justice Defenders Uganda.
“The Diploma in Paralegal Studies (DPS) course shall be primarily facilitated in prisons and the primary beneficiaries are the prisoners, however, it is also open for other categories of people that would prefer to have the basic understanding of the law in it’s basic areas of application such as family law, criminal law, property law, and so on,” he said.
Mutabanura, in his remarks said, people who work in police, the prisons, the army and other offices can apply for the course, thereby assisting in legal and administrative services to lawyers in private practice and those in government like the Attorney General’s office.
“On the Social Corporate Responsibility, the University has exhibited passion in several formats towards giving back to the community, for example through the available 42 scholarships, 30 merit and 12 leadership plus those based on exemplary performance to help students with financial constraints, those who are academically excelling. In addition to the Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga scholarship for female law students, the Benjamin Mkapa scholarship for Tanzania students and the Riek Machar scholarships.” He noted.
