Government Offers State Funeral for Archbishop Emeritus Paul Bakyenga

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda has granted the fallen Arch Bishop of Mbarara Paul Kamuza Bakyenga of Mbarara, a state burial.

The deceased passed on this week on Tuesday 18, July, 2023 at 79 years at Nsambya hospital where had gone for his regular medical checkups.

Through a statement on the Arch Bishop’s death signed by the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, the deceased was commended for his legacy on the country.

Nabanja wrote; “Archbishop Bakyenga was a humble and dedicated servant of the Lord, who touched many lives through his spiritual work.”

She mentioned that the state funeral is in honor of his contribution to the country. “H.E the president of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has granted Archbishop Bakyenga an official burial in honor of his contribution to our country,” the statement read in part.

Under his leadership, the Mbarara Diocese was elevated to an archdiocese in 1999, and he became its first Archbishop. He was the overseer for the Western ecclesiastical province, which covers the dioceses of Hoima, Fort Portal, Kasese, and Kabale.

The Archbishop Bakyenga retired from his position in 2020 after serving the church with unwavering devotion for many decades. He was succeeded by Lambert Bainomugisha in 2020 upon his retirement.
