Representatives for people with special needs in Iganga district are demanding for inclusive forms of sensitization for the Parish Development Model (PDM).
A concern was raised that while they are supposed to be among the beneficiaries, sensitization meetings are held in places inaccessible to them. In addition, even the models of communication are hardly inclusive to their needs.

The demand came up during a training with local leaders on how to work with people with special needs held within Iganga. During the meeting, local leaders raised concern as to why this particular category of people was lagging behind in embracing the PDM.
Ezra Gabula, the LC V Chairperson Iganga district challenged his colleagues to take advantage of opportunities for development whenever they come like PDM and acquiring education.
“I call upon support from every individual and authority towards the development of people with special needs. You should not deny these people opportunities like education and financial growth. I am able to lead you today because my parents overlooked my disability and took me to school.”
In addition, Lydia Namakika, the Inspector for People with special needs pointed out that holding sensitization meetings for the Parish Development Model at sub counties has led to the exclusion of those at lower levels who need the information most.
“In the rural areas, people with special needs are being left behind because their homes are not reached with this information since meetings are always held at the sub county level. How about those who are far away?” Namakika questioned.
The leaders condemned all forms of discrimination against people with disabilities manifesting in accessing medical care, education, infra-structure use and communication in government offices. They promised to pursue that all offices and facilities get sign language interpreters to ease communication for people with hearing impairment.
Besides ventures with the PDM, the leaders encouraged people with special needs to capitalize on hand skill businesses like tailoring, making liquid soap and hair dressing among others.
