Juveniles Buried Alive at Busabala Stone Quarry Site

Two juveniles have been buried alive at a stone quarry site in Busabala, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso district.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said the tragic rock slide on the evening of yesterday at the Kibiri A zone in the Busabala ward.

Police have identified the juvenile victims as Okecho Emurani 13, and Balaka, aged 11. Locals have told police that the juveniles were loading soil onto an unidentified motor vehicle tipper when the rock abruptly moved and killed them.

“The vehicle fled the scene immediately after the incident, and police are currently investigating the matter and searching for the suspects, including the owners of the tipper who had hired the children,” Owoyesigyire said.

Three years ago, the Uganda National Roads Authority restricted access to the quarry and has been impounding any vehicles that enter the site illegally.

Owoyesigyire said the bodies of the deceased children have been retrieved and taken to the City Mortuary in Mulago for a post-mortem examination.

“The police are advising the public to stay away from the quarry, which has been deemed unstable, and are working to sensitize the community about the dangers of child labor,” Owoyesigyire said.
