Police at Kawempe are investigating circumstances under which two people are suspected to have been murdered in an act of arson.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said the fire occurred three days ago at around 5pm at Jinja Kawempe Zone ‘A’ Jinja Kawempe Ward in Nabweru Division, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso district.
Police say the fire gutted an apartment belonging to Sanyu Grace (Land Lord) a businesswoman and resident of the same area. Owoyesigyire said the double room in which two people burnt to death was being rented and occupied by Keitesi Suzan aged 24 years.
“It is reported that Keitesi received two visitors only identified as Patricia, 24 her cousin, and Kajumba, 27 her friend. She told the police that the visitors came to her place in the morning and the fire broke out later that evening while they were still in the house,” Owoyesigyire said.
Kawempe policing division and Kampala North regional police fire brigade was informed, responded, and put out the fire. However, Patricia and Kajumba had already been burnt by the time police contained the fire.
“Our officers later visited Kaitesi Susan in the clinic where she had been rushed for first aid and she was later referred to Kawempe Hospital for further management and later discharged. We have reserved the scene for further examination by officials from National Building Review Board, UMEME, and other stakeholders, to ascertain the exact cause of the fire,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police say whereas the tenant had a gas cooker, it was in a store and it remained intact. This has prompted police to dig deeper for more information about the incident.
“We have however arrested Kaitesi Suzan on allegations of Murder as investigations continue,” Owoyesigyire said.
