Police have arrested five more suspects in connection with the killing of professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, bringing the total number of people in custody to eight.
According to a press statement released by the Uganda Police Force, the latest arrests follow ongoing investigations into an alleged mob attack that occurred on 5 June 2026. Authorities say efforts are still underway to identify and apprehend additional individuals believed to have participated in the incident.
The suspects currently in custody have been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, Namukose Juliet, Mondoni Elly, Twinomujuni Herbert, Katsigazi Perigrino, Tayebwa Darlious, and Tugume Hannington.
Police did not immediately provide details about the circumstances that led to Gongodyo’s death, but described the incident as a mob killing, raising fresh concerns about the persistence of mob justice in parts of the country.
Gongodyo, a well-known figure in Uganda’s rugby community, was reportedly attacked on 5 June under circumstances that remain under investigation. His death has sparked public concern and calls for swift justice from sports stakeholders and the wider community.
In its statement, the Uganda Police Force reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability. “Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the incident,” the statement read.
Police further assured the public that all suspects will be subjected to due process as investigations continue.
The force also urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminal activity to authorities.
