Police Arrest Over 50 Suspects in Crackdown on Crime Hotspots in Greater Kampala

Kampala, Uganda — Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested more than 50 suspects following a series of coordinated security operations targeting crime hotspots across Mukono District, Kira Municipality, and Nakawa Division.

The operations, conducted between June 4 and 5, 2026, involved joint efforts between police, other security agencies, and community stakeholders, and were aimed at disrupting criminal activity and addressing the growing concern of illicit substance abuse in urban areas.

In Mukono District, security teams raided Kigombya and surrounding areas in Mukono Central Division, as well as Namuyenje in Nakisunga Sub-county. Two suspects were arrested in Kigombya, a location police described as a known hotspot for electric cable theft. The suspects were allegedly found in possession of stolen electric wires and are currently in custody pending prosecution.

In a separate operation in Namuyenje, police arrested 11 suspects from areas believed to harbour individuals involved in robberies, burglaries, theft, gambling, and drug abuse. All suspects remain detained as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, in Kira Municipality, police targeted Kireka A, B, and C zones, with a particular focus on Obojja Ghetto and Kireka Farmers Market. The operation led to the arrest of 30 individuals allegedly involved in the sale and consumption of illicit drugs. Authorities say the suspects were apprehended from locations where they reportedly gather to plan criminal activities. Exhibits believed to be narcotic substances were recovered and retained as evidence.

In Nakawa Division, a joint security team carried out operations in Katoogo Slums, Kinawataka Zone One, Kaggo Zone, and Mbuya One Parish. Ten adult male suspects were arrested in connection with alleged drug abuse and related crimes such as robbery and housebreaking.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, said the operations are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve public safety. “We remain committed to conducting intelligence-led operations aimed at eliminating criminal elements, addressing substance abuse, and ensuring the safety of the public,” Owoyesigyire said.

He added that similar operations will continue across identified hotspots in the Kampala metropolitan area as police intensify efforts to maintain law and order.
