At least two police officers are in custody over a man who was shot dead last night in Kasokoso, zone, Kira Municipality, in Wakiso district. The arrested police officers include Police Constable Michael Okwalinga and PC Jackson Okello.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, has confirmed the arrest and detention of PC Okwalinga and PC Okello in connection with the murder of Simon Waibu who was allegedly in a fight with his former spouse Zaina Nakazibwe.
Police said Rinformation was received at Kasokoso Police Post that there was a man strangling his wife at Delax bar in Kasokoso zone. PC Okwalinga Michael and PC Okello Jackson responded to the information.
“It is said that on reaching at the scene one Waibu Simon (deceased) was found strangling a woman known by the names of Nakazibwe Zaina aged about 20yrs Munyankole by tribe who works as a bar maid and when they tried to arrest him he first resisted. PC Okwalinga shot a bullet in the air that prompted him to accept to go with the police officers,” police explained.
However, police said while going ,the deceased ran away from the police officers prompting PC Okwalinga to shoot at him a number of times as he was running away and he died. PC Okwalinga discharged 21 rounds of ammunitions and only nine remained in the magazine.
“It is also established that the the deceased went to Delax bar at 2100/c and at about midnight he grabbed Nakazibwe Zaina his ex girlfriend and tried to strangle her. PC Okwalinga Michael and PC okello Jackson in custody at Kira Division Police,” police said.
Nevertheless, police explanation is contrary to what the information earlier shared in some social media groups which indicated that PC Okwalinga and his victim Waibu were having a sexual relationship with Zaina Nakazibwe. It is alleged that PC Okwalinga found Waibu in a compromising position with Nakazibwe and his action was an act of infidelity.
Onyango said on Saturday morning, the residents of Kasokoso being mobilised by the area defence and politicians attempted demonstrate claiming that police had not helped them in as far as getting the body from the mortuary was agreed.
A team led by the DPC Kira division, DCID and DCIO responded to the information where they met the area leadership and relatives of the deceased and in the meeting ,it was agreed that police provided fuel, a coffin and food to assist in the burial. The situation is normal and the relatives have been escorted by police to assist them get the body from Mulago.
