The Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports has urged politicians to stop framing Busoga University along tribal lines, stressing that “Busoga” is a regional name, not a tribal one. James Kubeketelya, MP for Bunya East, said debates over the university’s name have delayed its opening. Stakeholders, including the Office of the Auditor General and the Public Accounts Committee, have proposed renaming it Kiira University or Iganga University.
Speaking at a meeting with the Taskforce Management Committee and MPs, Kubeketelya praised the army-led taskforce for effectively managing the budget for renovating the old university buildings.
Professor John Tabuti, chair of the taskforce, said the university has made significant progress, including acquiring six land titles totaling 219.8 acres, refurbishing 13 buildings and 64 rooms at the Iganga campus, and connecting the campus to national water and electricity grids.
Nine academic programs have received financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, and the university will be fully government-funded. Muwuma Kalulu Milton, MP for Kigulu South, called on the public to support Busoga University, describing it as “the only slice we can claim from the national cake of Uganda.”
