Police have recovered four submachine guns (SMGs) in a major security operation within the Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area, marking what authorities describe as a significant breakthrough in the fight against aggravated robberies. In a statement addressing growing public concern over crime across the country, police leadership said they are taking the situation seriously and remain fully committed to protecting lives and property. “As custodians of public peace and safety, we remain fully committed to protecting lives and property,” the statement read.
Between January 20 and 24, 2026, security operations within the Kampala Metropolitan Policing (KMP) area led to the recovery of four SMGs and the arrest of nine suspects. Preliminary investigations have linked the recovered firearms to more than 12 crime scenes. Since the operations, police report that incidents of armed robbery have significantly declined in the affected areas.
Authorities said several incidents reported directly to police and through social media platforms prompted swift operational responses, many of which resulted in successful interventions. In addition to the firearms recovery, police have carried out multiple disruptive security operations across the Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area. From January 3 to date, more than 440 suspected muggers, burglars, and narcotics users have been arrested. All suspects have undergone screening, and the majority have been arraigned before court.
Police also reported significant progress in several high-profile murder investigations. Breakthroughs have been registered in cases involving the murder of a socialite in Kyanja, the killing of a director at Uganda Christian University (UCU), and the murder of two individuals at a hotel in Lungujja. Key suspects have been arrested, and investigators say they are pursuing strong leads.
Law enforcement officials have appealed to the public to remain calm and continue cooperating with authorities. Citizens are encouraged to maintain constant communication with police through command center hotlines and local station contacts in their respective neighborhoods. Police say the ongoing operations are part of a broader strategy to restore public confidence and ensure safety across the country.
