The sniffer dogs have today helped police to apprehend suspects in the murder of Apollo Tiwangye who was gruesomely exterminated in the morning hours. Tiwangye was found lying in a pool of blood.
Police deployed sniffer dogs that led its officers up to a distance of more than a kilometre which was the home of the deceased’s second wife. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Samson Kasasira, said once the dogs zeroed at a home in Rwakashana cell, Nyarubare parish, Ntungamo subcounty, Ntungamo district, the occupants were immediately arrested.
Investigators later established that the suspects are a wife and a son to the deceased. “Upon receiving the report, a team of officers from Homicide with the help of the K9 unit responded and cordoned off the scene. The team introduced the police sniffer dog jaguar which picked the scent and tracked for a distance of one kilometre on a hill and led the officers to the home of the deceased’s second wife identified as Arinaitwe Agnes,” ASP Kasasira said.
Nevertheless, security is yet to establish the motive of the murder since the suspects had not yet denied nor confirmed committing the crime. ASP Kasasira said a search was conducted leading to the recovery of the deceased’s phone covered with blood stains.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had a long-standing domestic wrangle. The duo is now being held at Ntungamo police station. CP Martin Mugume, the commandant of police canine unit recently told the media that Uganda has over 200 sniffer dogs and would need at least 300 more to match the population and number of crimes.
