Shock, fear and disbelief engulfed residents of Parliament village in Kira Municipality after a Senior Four student hanged self in protest of his father’s decision to put him in a school not of his choice.
Emmanuel Okello, terminated his life yesterday accusing his father Moses Opio of being a dictator for deciding to take him to St Kizito SS in Namugongo without his consent. Woes started when the deceased told his father that he was not ready to report back to Makerere College.
Opio told police that when his son showed no interest of going back to Makerere College, he thought it was wise to put him in a school that is not very far from home. “He told me he was not ready to go back to Makerere College. He did not give the reason. I got him a position at St Kizito SS Namugongo thinking he would be happy. But he still told me that he was not interested,” Opio said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Okello use a chance when his siblings had been taken back to school, locked his father inside and then committed suicide. “The body of the deceased has been taken to the morgue for a post mortem. The police urge parents to report to the police or seek professional help whenever they detect signs of depression manifesting in their children,” deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said.
