The relatives of former United Nations –UN employee, Aziz Bashir, are in tears after the later was lynched by Boda-Boda riders on Sunday morning.
Aziz met his death after he allegedly knocked a motorcycle taxi rider in pursuit of another who had earlier scratched his brand new vehicle UBK 393D. At around 7am, Aziz’s car was scratched by unidentified a rider at Mengo-Katale road, in Lubaga division in Kampala.
Witnesses told police that Aziz disembarked his vehicle visibly charged and demanded the rider to pay him Shs500,000 for repair services. In the process of demanding for money, two Boda-Boda riders emerged and shielded their colleague.
After learning that his colleagues had come to his rescue, the rider who had scratched Aziz’s car decided to ride away. This irked Aziz and he decided to pursue him using his own vehicle. But unfortunately, he knocked another Boda-Boda rider.
Assistant Superintendent of Police –ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, said Aziz was encircled around Lyna Primary School. “He was pulled out of the vehicle and lynched by the boda-boda group to death.We have embarked on viewing CCTV footages to identify the riders who could have carried out the criminal act,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
By close of business, police had arrested two suspects in connection to Aziz’s murder. Police has identified one of the involved motorcycles as UEJ 515K and the deceased’s motor vehicle UBK 393D are parked at Old Kampala.
“The body of the deceased was conveyed to city mortuary Mulago for a post mortem. We also condemn acts of mob justice as they offer no solution to any problem and are illegal by law. We will provide more details about the incident in due course,” Owoyesigyire said.
More than 500 people were lynched death last year according to Criminal Investigations Directorate. Mob action denies one chance to defend self and it is falls under the capital offences punishable by life imprisonment or death sentence.
