Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, will tomorrow take his seventh oath as president of the Republic of Uganda.
Museveni will have ruled Ugandans for 40 years at the end of his five years’ term starting tomorrow at Kololo Independence Grounds.
Having captured power in 1986 after a five years bush war, Museveni has seen at least 10 African presidents he found in power including those that came when he was already president getting buried.
Many died in office while others died after they had left power in their respective countries. The Daily Press, has compiled the list of African presidents who have died when Museveni’s appetite for Uganda’s topmost office seems to be increasing every day.
Idris Deby (Chad)
Idris Deby is the latest African president to die when Museveni he found in power is still presiding over Uganda. Deby met his creator last month after he was shot at the frontline when he had visited his troops in the Warfield after winning a fifth term. At 68, Deby had led Chad for more than 20 years having captured power through a gun in 1999.
John Magufuli [Tanzania]Magufuli
After only five years of leadership, John Pombe Magufuli, died in March this year as a result of heart complications at a hospital in Dar es Salaam. He was elected in 2015 replacing Jakaya Kikwete and his short-lived leadership was characterized by love for his country and witch-hunting opponents.
Pierre Nkurunziza [Burundi]
He died in June 2020 of a ‘cardiac arrest as his government announced. He had been in power for 15 years and he was to retire in a two months’ time since he had been replaced in an election by Gen Ndishimiye who is the current president.
Mohamed Abdelaziz [Western Sahara] died in 2016 at 68.
Michael Sata, president of Zambia (2014): Michael Sata died at the age of 77 of an undisclosed illness in the United Kingdom on October 28th, 2014. After his election in 2011, rumors about his failing health spread across Zambia.
Meles Zenawi, prime minister of Ethiopia (2012): Meles Zenawi died in August of 2012 in Belgium at the age of 57 of an undisclosed infection. He led Ethiopia for a total of 21 years, as president from 1991 to 1995 and as prime minister from 1995 to 2012.
John Atta Mills, president of Ghana (2012): Also in 2012, John Atta Mills, the president of Ghana, died in his home country of stroke and throat cancer at the age of 68. He won the presidential election in 2008 and was in office for only three years.
Bingu wa Mutharika, president of Malawi (2012): Another president to die in 2012 is Bingu wa Mutharika, the president of Malawi. He suffered a heart attack in April and died two days later at the age of 78.
Malam Bacai Sanha, president of Guinea-Bissau (2012): The fourth leader to die in 2012 was Malam Bacai Sanha, the president of Guinea-Bissau. He suffered from diabetes and died in Paris after four years as president at the age of 64.
Moammar Gadhafi, Libya (2011):
A victim of assassination, Moammar Gadhafi was the self-professed Libyan leader and guide to the revolution. He was killed at the age of 69 by rebel forces in unclear circumstances in Libya, after being its leader for 42 years.
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, president of Nigeria (2011): Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the president of Nigeria, died at the age of 58 in 2011 from pericarditis in Nigeria. He had been in office for only three years.
Joao Bernardo Vieira, president of Guinea-Bissau (2009): Joao Bernardo Vieira, the president of Guinea-Bissau, was assassinated in his own country in March 2009 at the age of 69. He was the head of state for a combined 31 years. In 1978, he became prime minister and seized power in 1980 and ruled for 19 years.
Omar Bongo, President of Gabon (2009): Advanced intestinal cancer killed Omar Bongo in June 2009 in Barcelona, Spain, after being in office for 42 consecutive years. He died aged 72 and was one of the longest-serving rulers in history and also one of the most corrupt.
Lansana Conte, president of Guinea (2008): After 24 years, Lansana Conte died of undisclosed illness at the age of 74. He battled complications from diabetes and heart-related conditions.
Other former president who have died under Museveni leadership include: Arap Daniel Moi died in February 2020 after 18 years of leaving power as Kenya’s president. He died at 95. Moi left power after public pressure because his leadership was characterized by authoritarian rule and rampant corruption.
Benjamin Mkapa was former Tanzania former president who died at 81 in July 2020. The deceased had become president following the country’s first multiparty election in 1995 and went on to lead the country up to 2005 [BBC]. He is credited for boosting tax collections, instituting austerity measures to curb wasteful expenditure and opening doors to foreign investors.
Pierre Buyoya: He was an ex-Burundi president. Buyoya was reported to have died in Paris of Covid-19 at the age of 71. Buyoya, who was credited with helping push democracy in the small African country but was accused of involvement in his successor’s assassination [ AFP].

Joseph Habyarimana –Rwanda
Robert Mugabe died about three years ago. He was Zimbabwe president since 1980.
