Kira road police station is holding, Ben Matovu, 34, the Uganda National Examination Board -UNEB’s chief invigilator over allegations of helping Senior Four candidates to write a condolence letter during the English paper one examination at Majorine College Mulawa.
Matovu has been arrested after the UNEB supervisor for Kira station in Wakiso district, Mary Akello 62, overheard rumours that Matovu who is also a teacher at Namugongo Martyrs SS stood in front of the candidates sounding words that guided the candidates and allegedly moved to some of them whispering how to respond to the question.
Sources said the incident happened on Monday but it kept gaining ground up to the stage where Akello could no longer stomach it and decided to open a case against the accused. Police opened a general (Kira G.E.F 028/2022) and then proceeded to apprehend teacher Matovu.
“While S.4 candidates were doing UNEB English paper one 112/1, the centre chief invigilator one Matovu Ben is said to have stood in front and sounded words of guiding candidates on how to answer the question about writing a condolence letter that whoever put one address on that letter is a fool, it has two addresses and told them to get fresh answer sheets and cross the letter with one heading,” sources said.
Sources added that: “He is also said to have moved to a few candidates whispering to them on how to answer the question. The information was revealed by candidates after doing the paper and the area UNEB supervisor got a wind of it and later on reported it to the police after she had physically intervened by interviewing some candidates and invigilators at the center.”
Brief facts so far gathered indicate Matovu was first appointed centre invigilator but later reappointed chief invigilator after the first one gave birth and could not proceed with the assignment.
Majorine College Mulawa administration has distanced itself from Matovu’s actions towards their candidates and insists that he should be interrogated to know his motive. So far, a number of candidates have been interviewed and investigations are in progress.
