Businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu who made headlines in 2016 after killing child rights activist Kenneth Akena has been released from jail. Kanyamunyu shot and killed Akena at Lugogo after the latter scratched his vehicle. Kanyamunyu was in the car with his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari.
Kanyamunyu who is also a relative to Winnie Byanyima the wife to Dr Kizza Besigye one of Uganda’s longest opposition figures was found guilty of killing Akena and sentenced to five years in jail.
Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) Frank Baine confirmed that Kanyamunyu has been released like other inmates after serving his sentence. The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) withdrew murder charges against Munwangari and she was subsequently set free.
