Woman Drags Lover to LC1 Over Battering

Nanyunja, who currently can’t walk very well because of the injuries inflicted on her, has been married to Kanda for 9 years. She says that her husband working at Arua Park in Kampala, would come back from work drunk and then start beating and assaulting her using a hummer and other equipment.

Lydia Nanyunja, a resident of the corner zone in Kawempe, has run to the area Local council chairman seeking help after being severely beaten by her husband Ronald Kanda accusing her of having other Marital relationships outside marriage.

Nanyunja, who currently can’t walk very well because of the injuries inflicted on her, has been married to Kanda for 9 years. She says that her husband working at Arua Park in Kampala, would come back from work drunk and then start beating and assaulting her using a hummer and other equipment.

Nanyunja who was narrating to the LC 1 chairman while in tears revealed that at some point Kanda used a hammer to beat her which injured her back to the point of not being able to move normally.

” I have spent 3 days in the house after being beaten by my husband at night to the point that I couldn’t move. He locks me inside the house in the morning when going to work so that the neighbors can’t see my bleeding wounds,” she said.

She adds that after beating her the husband buys her some medicines to health the injuries and then locks her inside the house until he comes back from work in the evening.

Halima Kyosiga, a neighbor stated that the couple have been often fighting over simple issues and the man beats the wife severely. She adds that they advised that woman to seek help from the LC but she was hesitant in fear of the husband.

Salima Ndagire one of the residents, appealed to the authorities to arrest Kanda and take him out of the community because he is a threat to even other members of the community.

Matthias Mulumba, the LC1 chairman of the corner zone, said that there are high numbers of domestic violence in his area because of the informal settlements. Mulumba revealed that he receives 3 cases of domestic violence every day in his office of which most of which are due to poverty and the use of alcohol among men.

He appealed to the child and family protection unit of Kawempe Police Station to carry out massive sensitization and marital talks among the community to reduce domestic violence cases in the area.
