At least 91 people are admitted in various health amenities in Rubanda district after eating food suspected to have been laced with poison at burial.
Assistant Superintendent of Police – ASP Elly Mate, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson, said the case is being investigated under GEF: 001/2023.
Mate said the victims ate food at the burial of Samuel Katuro, Kishasha parish, Nkumba sub-county, Rubanda district.
“Police in Rubanda are investigating circumstances under which 91 people fell sick after the food they ate at a burial. The incident was reported by Reuben Ahimbisibwe the area c/man Kitahurira cell Kashasha parish Nkumba s/c Rubanda districtstrict,” police said.
Ahimbisibwe alleged that on 6/01/2023 at around 3pm 91 people fell sick at the burial but they could not establish the cause of the illness.
“But there was suspicion that they had been poisoned. Police together with the Health team responded and conveyed the victims to various health centres in Muko, Kitahurira, lkumba and Kyiizi where they got first Aid and had improved and were being discharged,” ASP Mate said.
Police have patterned with the medical team to examine all the patients. The medics suspect the victims were infected with a bacteria probably got from poorly prepared food but not poison.
