Catherine Nuwahereza 20, has been arrested by locals and handed over to Yesu Amala police station, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso district, after she allegedly set her house ablaze and killed her four months old son.
The shocking incident happened today at 8pm when locals saw Nuwahereza running out of the house living her son, Darius Kazibwe, to burn to death.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said the incident has since been taken over by Nansana which is the main police station in the area.
“Police has began investigating an incident of arson that resulted in the death of Kazibwe Darius, a 4-month-old child. The child’s mother has been accused by eye witnesses of causing the fire and was seen fleeing the scene by community members, who later arrested her and handed her over to Yesu Amala Police station,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police put the fire out of action. However, police found when the toddler had already suffocated to death.
“It is believed that the child suffocated before receiving burns on his left arm. Relevant witness statements have been taken and the suspect remains in custody,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. This year has registered many gruesome incidents where mothers have butchered their own. In Mukono, a mother killed two her own children. This came weeks after another mother in Kikuube district had killed her three children.
