90 Suspected Criminals Arrested

At least 90 suspected criminals have been apprehended in intense operations on targeting thugs along Northern Bypass that have been hitting drivers, riders and pedestrians with stones.

A number of people have been hit with pavers in the night hours driving at Northern Bypass. The thugs wait for victims on pavements or on top of flyovers and walkovers where stones are thrown targeting drivers as well as riders. The aim of criminals according to police is to make drivers lose control and get involved in an accident so that they can be robbed clean.

Today’s operations conducted by police and army according to Assistant Superintendent of Police -ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, who is also the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, aimed at clamping down on thugs, criminals who have shifted to villages near the Northern Bypass.

“Joint task teams of the police and UPDF carried out an intelligence-led operation in areas of Gaza, which is located in Mabito. The village is a known hiding place for suspected criminals terrorizing Nateete, Busega, and Kampala areas. Some 90 suspects were arrested and are currently detained at Nateete Police Station,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

Police explain that the suspects have been engaging in crimes like phone theft during rush hours, burglary, and aggravated robbery. Many of their victims have been stabbed and assaulted before being robbed of their property.

“Exhibits including knives and suspected stolen phones among others were recovered in the operation. The suspects will be arraigned in courts of law as soon as investigations are complete,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
